A Guide to Getting from the Airport to Baku City Center

Plan your smooth journey from Baku Airport to the heart of the city with this helpful guide

Baku, Azerbaijan’s vibrant capital, is a city that enthralls visitors with its ancient walled city, modern skyscrapers, and delicious cuisine. But if you’re just arriving at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, you might be wondering how to get to the heart of the action. Fear not, intrepid traveler! This guide will help you with all the knowledge you need to navigate your way from the airport to the city center with ease.

Baku Airport Transportation Options

1. TAXIS

a) Traditional taxis and London cabsare readily available outside the airport exit gate and they are the fastest and most convenient option. Look for the official BakuTaxi purple/red (London) cabs or any tranditional taxi to ensure fastest reach to your place of stay. The ride to the city center typically takes about 40 minutes (depending on traffic) and costs around 30-40 AZN (approximately 17-23 USD)

BUT make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand to avoid being overcharged. The negotiated fare clears all misunderstanding that the driver knows the destination and it includes the parking fee at the airport.

NOTE: This is the fare for the minimum effort to get taxi. However, you can get a much fairer price.

b) You can definitely use international Bolt App or local Yango App to get an airport transfer from Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) to Baku city center. Here’s what you need to know:

Booking a ride through the Bolt/Yango app is quick and easy, and you can see the estimated fare and arrival time before you book. Bolt/Yango offers upfront pricing, so you know exactly how much your ride will cost before you get in the car. Bolt/Yango is often cheaper than traditional taxis, especially for longer rides. An estimated fare to Baku Central Railway Station (28 May station) should be around 10-15 AZN. (6 – 9 USD)

Things to keep in mind:

While Bolt/Yango is generally reliable in Baku, there may be times when drivers are scarce, especially during peak hours, a few cases of Bolt driver scamming the passengers.

While you can pay for your Bolt (credit card payment is an issue)/Yango (usually no issue with credit card payment) ride with your credit card in the app, some drivers may ask for cash payment directly. Be cautious of such requests and stick to in-app payment whenever possible, or agree on cash payment with no additional charges upon the arrival at the destination.

Follow the instructions in the Bolt/Yango app for locating the designated pickup points at the airport. Make sure the car matches the details in the app before getting in.

2. AERO EXPRESS BUS (AIRPORT SHUTTLE)

The most budget-friendly choice, the Aero Express bus connects the airport directly to the square out front of Baku Central Railway Station nex to 28 May metrostation and vice versa. Tickets cost only 1.50 AZN (approximately $0.85 USD), and the journey takes about 40 minutes. Buses run regularly from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM (Check live schedule here).

You have to first get BakuKart from vendor machines just outside the exit gate. For the adventurous traveler, combining the BakuKart (a rechargeable travel card) with public buses and the metro offers a flexible and affordable option. Top up your BakuKart for the desired amount (the machines DO NOT return petty cash. Use no more than 10 AZN for two people).

Aero Express Bus should be visible from where you get BakuKart. Hop on bus H1. Then you are on your way to Baku City Center.

  • The shuttle bus stops:
    • Terminal 1
    • Terminal 2
    • Baku Expo Center
    • Koroglu metro station (Commuter’s Hub)
    • 28 May Metro Station / Central Railway station

3. PRIVATE TRANSFERS

Pre-booking a private transfer is a comfortable and hassle-free way to get to your hotel or chosen destination. Prices vary depending on the company and vehicle type, but expect to pay more than taxis. Most hotels in Baku offer private transfers.

For a hassle-free travel experience, especially if you have lots of luggage, consider a private transfer. You’ll have a guaranteed ride with an English-speaking driver/guide who can also provide valuable information about the city to help you plan your upcoming days.

Extra Tips for arranging your transfer from the Airport:

  • Exchange currency: Have some local currency (AZN) on hand for taxis, buses, and BakuKart top-ups.
  • Download offline maps: Having a map app with offline functionality can be helpful, especially if you’re using public transport.
  • Consider traffic: Baku can experience rush hour congestion (8 AM – 10 AM and 5 PM – 7 PM), so factor that in when choosing your transportation mode and timing your arrival.

With this guide in your pocket, you’re now ready to conquer Baku and embark on an unforgettable exploration of this captivating city. So, buckle up, choose your preferred mode of transport, and get ready to be amazed by Baku’s charm!
